VELOUR LOVELINESS at Crafty Mamas

At Crafty Mamas, we ADORE Velour. It's comfy, easy to sew, snuggly and keeps you and the kiddos warm and toasty. The colours available in Australia tend to be quite muted...not anywhere near as bright as we like at CM. So I have had to take matters into my own hands...that would be my very colourful stained hands...and start producing some colours we ADORE!

This week, TURQUOISE and CHERRY.

Crafty Mama's own tub dyed velour knits! A whopping 176cm wide, and super snuggly and soft.
Velour is 80% cotton/20% nylon. weight = 255gsm. Tub dyed using fibre reactive procion dyes- colour stays beautiful and strong after repeated washings.

With an extra bonus ingredient: LOVE.

Some Little Monsters are Invading Crafty Mamas!

Lovely little iron on vinyl Monsters!

I can see these on Blood Red Stella or even orange?  Boy approved already, my son loves them!

Made from flexible vinyl, so it  produces a thin, soft finish when you iron it on to your projects. And... this material is completely eco-friendly (free of PVC and heavy metals) which is ideal to use for children's clothing! I'm having fun getting a range of iron-on's ready for Crafty Mamas. That's if I can bring myself to part with them!

Have a lovely weekend!

KIDs TRUCKIE SINGLET- A Crafty Mama pattern!

This is the prototype of my Kids Truckie Singlet!

This pattern is super quick to sew up, and suitable for cotton / cotton blend knits. It is shown is VERMONT, a 100% cotton peached rib, (from a Buy at Crafty Mamas last year). As soon as I grade the pattern I'll put it up as a freeby. Winter is coming and we need those little ones to have warm singlets!

TUTE: Ottobre Design Creative Workshop 301 - Tees to Racer Back Tank

When you are on a good thing, stick with it! Unless of course, you can alter that good thing to make something different! Ottobre Design 301 Creative Workshop is an awesome pattern.

A very versatile tee pattern, with two options- either straight fit or close fit. I have left the sleeves off it and made numerous tanks. Today's project: a Racer Back Tank!

To make the Racer Back version you will need to adjust your back piece. I chose the straight cut option., so piece #6.

Now, grab yourself something round that is the same size as the armhole...being in the kitchen , I found this dandy bread and butter plate fit pretty well.

Next, decided how far in want your racer concave to go...then mark with a dot. This is for Miss 10, so I don't  want her flashing too much flesh!

Now, sliding your plate in through the arm hole, so it just touches your "dot". You have now made your arm hole bigger!  Trace around your plate. ( at this point I realized I now have orange Sharpy on my kitchen bench...boy will I get in trouble for this!).

So here is your new BACK piece!

Cut out your back as per usual, along the fold. I am not adding seam allowance to the neckline or armholes as I am going to bind them.

And here all your bits cut out ready to go. BACK, FRONT and Bindings strips.
From here,
1. Sew up one shoulder seam
2. Finish neckline with binding
3. Sew up other shoulder seam
4.Finish one armhole with binding, then the other.
5. Sew side seams, hem!

Note; this fabric is a cotton/poly, with decent recovery. If your fabric is not quite as zingy, you may want to run a few small gathers around the armhole near centre back, to keep in from bagging.Gather then bind.

All from Crafty Mamas, of course!

Happy Sewing!

TUESDAY's EATS

This is a favourite cake of ours, a little bit healthy with the zucchini, very moist and the kids love it!

Zucchini Cake

2 cups plain flour (if you really want to be virtuous, use 1/2 wholemeal).
2 medium sized zucchini to yield approx 2 cups shredded.
1 1/4 cups raw sugar
1/2 cup vegie oil
1/3 cup water
1 1/4 tsp bicarb
2 tsp mixed spiced
1 tps vanilla
3 eggs

Preheat oven to 180o. Either mix all ingredients in bowl and then bear on low for 1 minute, scraping sides as you go. OR be lazy like me and tip  it all into the food processor and process til smooth. Pour into a greased  square cake tin - bake about 40 minutes until cooked. ( stick a skewer in to test). Sit a few minutes ( not you, the cake!) before turning out onto a cooling rack Cool completely then top with cream cheese icing. I use:

About 100gms softened Philly cheese
1 tablespoon butter
Beat together, then add about 2 cups icing sugar and a squeeze of lemon juice.
If too runny, add more icing sugar. ( I prefer pure icing sugar, you use less and it sets up better than mixture).

Enjoy!
